AN ICONIC BOOT: THE DESERT BOOT

Nathan Clark was serving as an officer in the Royal Army Service Corps in 1941 when he chanced upon an idea that would revolutionize British footwear. He designed Clarks Desert Boots in 1949. His idea was based on a boot that officers of the British Eighth Army wore in Egypt during the Second World War. They had them specially made for them by local tradesmen at Cairo’s Khan el-Khalili bazaar. The model was made by suede, 2 simple eyelets with a crepe sole: the first comfortable alternative to leather. Clarks style has been a favourite of style and cultural icons: Steve McQueen, Bob Dylan, the Beatles and many style movements from ‘60s.The desert boot is incredibly versatile: it looks sharp with a deconstructed jacket and is a dressier alternative to sneakers when worn with denim pants.
